Signs of the Times

We stand on the cusp of two centuries - one practically behind us, the next one emerging. Whether the one ahead will look a lot like the one behind is hard to say. However, the future can be a little different and that is what we want to share in the December 1999 issue of about...time Magazine.

  • In "Art & Soul," we feature Brian Lee Hill, an emerging artist who is taking the rage felt over injustice in the world and turning it into exciting art.
  • In "A Daisy to Remember," we pay tribute to the passing of Daisy Lee Gatson Bates, a key figures in the 1950s' integration and civil rights movement. Bates used her newspaper, the Arkansas State Press, to straighten the backs of people and raise the consciousness of a state and nation.
  • There is no surrender to despair in the "IBBMEC Trade Winds" story, where ever-emerging businesses are showcased during the International Black Buyers and Manufacturers Expo and Conference held in Washington, D.C. The expo encourages the exchange of business among people of color.
  • Mood Makers Books celebrates a growing trend in literary communities of not only expanding a conventional business within the neighborhood, but also moving products and services through e-commerce.
