about...time Magazine speaks your language as it chronicles the African-American experience--past, present and future. As a significant voice in the printed media, about...time Magazine assumes its obligation to document the importance and unique identity of African Americans who continue to make valuable contributions to this nation and world. about...time Magazine has been published in Rochester, New York, since December 1972. The monthly publication focuses on issues of international, national, and regional importance to African Americans. From the corridors of the White House and halls of Congress and State legislatures, to the offices of national organizations and community-based institutions, the publisher and editorial staff have interviewed leaders on the cutting edge of change. For example, about...time was on the campaign trail with L. Douglas Wilder (October 1989 cover story) during his race for Governor of Virginia; covered the historic inaugural events for Governor Wilder on January 13, 1990 (February 1990); and reported on a ground-breaking 7-nation, 23-day African Trade and Cultural Mission to sub-Saharan Africa from June 14 to July 5, 1992, with the Virginia delegation led by Governor Wilder (August 1992 cover story). about...time travelled to the White House to ask Lt. General Colin L. Powell about issues of world freedom and world peace when he served as director of the National Security Council (NSC) and as personal advisor to President Ronald Reagan (May 1988 cover story). We also made a projection about the future career of this decision-maker: "The effectiveness of General Powell's work has led to name-dropping as a possible vice presidential choice or as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff." Powell sent a letter of acknowledgement saying about...time Magazine "captured better than any article I have seen, the spirit of what we are trying to do at the NSC." (Powell was sworn in as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on October 1, 1989.) Over the past 25 years, about...time Magazine has received numerous awards for its presentations of clear information on the African-American experience through in-depth interviews, insightful commentary, special reports, newsbriefs, and features. We present an interesting mix of topics ranging from family life and education to business and culture. Issues are planned to reflect trends and report on those "up-and-coming" individuals, organizations, and events that will become future headlines. An example is our feature on golfing sensation Tiger Woods (October 1993 cover story) at the age of 17, after winning his third U.S. Junior Amateur title. The story noted Tiger Woods' feel for the game, his impressive swing, and everything else he does on the golf course which pinpointed him as one of the brightest young stars of the game. The about...time prediction in 1993 said: "Right now, Tiger is a half-finished Picasso painting. The first brush strokes are in place. The composition is emerging. Artists Earl and Tida Woods [his parents] will continue to work on the canvas for a few more years. Ultimately, however, the painting will become a self-portrait. It will be finished by Tiger." This year, Tiger Woods turned pro and is blazing ever new trails in the game of golf! about...time Magazine continues to receive recognition for its historic Rochester Roots/Routes history series (July-December 1984), developed to document the contributions of the black community to the growth of this city in Western New York during its Sesquicentennial Celebration. The series ran in six parts, plus a supplement (February 1985), and provided 95 pages of documented history from the 1600s up to 1984. This ground-breaking work helped launch other historical research projects and programs acknowledging the contributions of African Americans by local museums and also served as a reference tool for the "Field to Factory" exhibit developed by the Smithsonian Institution. We are proud to say the success of this publication is the result of strong lines of communication between our staff and the African-American community. This cooperation will continue to help us build bridges from the community to the cutting edge of history, as about...time Magazine maintains its commitment to recognize everyday individuals who live by personal philosophies that not only enrich themselves professionally, but also are beneficial to others. |
