With Liberty and Justice

"With Liberty and Justice" lands on the ear with great flair, but do the words ring true for African Americans in the 21st century? After more than three centuries of exploitation and oppression most African Americans want "the struggle" to be over. Yet "the struggle" continues on as you'll see in the January-February 2000 issue of about...time Magazine.

  • Net Wars: NAACP Battles for Space on Network TV illustrates the point that the venerable civil rights organization maintains a vital role by challenging the major television networks on the ways African Americans are represented on and employed in this powerful medium.
  • In his latest book, "The Debt," Randall Robinson raises serious questions about what happened to the promised forty acres and a mule, which was the government's pledge of a firm, fair start. The Touchy Question of Reparations makes one wonder - can African Americans find justice without it.
  • In A Dialogue Between Generations, Manning Marable reflects on a conversation held with a young man who believed the prospects for fundamental change in the near future are almost nonexistent. That despair moved Marable to a reply that sets the overall tone of this issue: "...Don't be intimidated by the power of the system. People united in struggle can make new history."
  • That same spirit is celebrated in the film that might earn actor Denzel Washington an Academy Award. Read about the men behind the fight that led to the righting of an injustice and the release of boxer Reuben "Hurricane" Carter in Let Freedom Ring.
  • Late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall was, for lack of a better word, the engineer of the American journey toward freedom and that notion is explored in A Strident Path.. This article looks closely at books that attempt to analyze the life and work of Marshall against this nation's official policy of racism, segregation and discrimination.
